Learn about the new Américo Vespucio Oriente 2 Highway

The 5.2-kilometer underground stretch includes a high-standard lane. Above ground, the works will add about 4.7 hectares (11.6 acres) of green space.

The new Américo Vespucio Oriente 2 high-standard highway will pass through four municipalities of our capital city and benefit 660,000 people. It was presented today by President Gabriel Boric, and will allow the Américo Vespucio ring road to be closed.

The Américo Vespucio Oriente 2 concession will cover the Av. Príncipe de Gales-Los Presidentes section. It includes the construction and operation of an underground urban highway, to be located mainly on the expropriated land along Américo Vespucio / Avenida Ossa, covering the municipalities of La Reina (from Las Luciérnagas Street), Ñuñoa, Macul and Peñalolén (to Av. Los Presidentes).

The work will connect to the north with the Américo Vespucio Oriente I, Av. El Salto – Príncipe de Gales section (AVO I), and to the south with the Vespucio Sur Highway.

Figures and information about the new Américo Vespucio Oriente 2 Highway

  • It is estimated that it will be inaugurated in the second half of 2028.
  • The highway will be 5.2 km in length, with three lanes on each side. It will run through the municipalities of La Reina, Ñuñoa, Macul and Peñalolén.
  • It will be built like a modern mining tunnel, at a depth of between 23 and 54 meters, under Metro Line 4.
  • The project involves an US$815 million investment. It will also provide around 1,500 new jobs per month at its peak.
  • During the 59 months of construction, the work will generate a total of more than 51,000 direct jobs and another 45,000 indirect jobs.
  • The work incorporates 47,000 m2 of urban surface improvements, including new plazas, seven kilometers of cycle lanes, bike racks, exclusive public transport lanes and a renovated central shoulder on the surface of Av. Américo Vespucio. That is a total of 4.7 hectares (11.6 acres) of recreation space.
  • The time to travel these 5.2 kilometers will decrease from 30 to five minutes. It is estimated that between El Salto (AVO I) and Los Presidentes (AVO 2), the journey will take only 10 minutes. This is a reduction of 85% compared to the travel time above ground before construction of the work.
