Chile to host clean energy summit that will bring together the main global economies

From May 31 to June 6, Chile will host the most important global clean energy and innovation summit of 2021: the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM 12) and the Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-6). It will be the first South American country ever to lead these ministerial meetings.

This time, both high-level forums will be held virtually on a digital platform that was especially designed for this purpose. This will enable interested individuals around the world to connect from their mobile devices to talks, panels and diverse content on demand.

The objectives of the CEM12/MI-6 forums are to stimulate collaboration between countries and the incorporation of technology and innovation, as well as concrete actions and agreements aimed at accelerating clean energy transformation, an aspect that is fundamental to meeting climate change commitments.

“The most developed countries are looking favorably upon all of the actions taken by Chile on energy matters. And as hosts of the most important event on clean energy and innovation, we believe that this is a very valuable opportunity to keep making progress towards an ambitious energy transition, where different countries can share good practices and coordinate concrete actions to make swifter progress and be efficient in order to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.  Furthermore, despite the fact that this is a high-level event, we want it to be focused on people. This is why we have been working on a unique and innovative platform so that everyone can see for themselves the larger discussions on energy, for the good of the planet, for those who inhabit it today and for the generations to come,” stated Energy and Mining Bi-Minister Juan Carlos Jobet.

“The Innovating to Net Zero summit by Mission Innovation considers the launch of an ambitious second phase of research and innovation on clean energy. Leading nations around the world are united around a shared vision. We acknowledge that the only way to shift towards a cleaner, less contaminant energy system around the world is by accelerating clean energy technologies through innovation. We invite everyone to the launch of MI 2.0 on June 2,” said Patrick Chile, Chair of the Steering Committee of Mission Innovation (MI).

Dan Dorner, Head of the Secretariat of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), declared that “the world is on the brink of a clean energy revolution. New technologies exist today that enable us to obtain clean energy from natural resources like the sun and wind. And there are other technologies that make it possible to use energy more efficiently in buildings, industries and vehicles. These technologies, when used in combination with supporting policies, can significantly reduce carbon pollution from traditional fossil fuels, improve local air quality, create jobs, improve energy safety and provide better access to energy around the world. By working together, governments and other stakeholders can overcome obstacles and make progress towards the adoption of clean energy technologies.”

Urgent challenges

The topics covered at this summit will revolve around social, economic and climate challenges, such as decarbonization, electromobility, green hydrogen and the innovations needed to reach carbon neutrality.

“We’re at a turning point, where we must adopt the necessary actions to drive forward energy transformation so as to achieve real change that will reduce global warming before it’s too late. This summit is precisely looking to reach agreements that will make it possible to adopt the necessary technologies and innovations to make this a reality, and it is the precursor to the COP 26 that will be held in a few months,” said Energy and Mining Bi-minister Juan Carlos Jobet.

The event will include a wide variety of options for participants, including ministerial plenary sessions, thematic events and talks with well-known personalities. Alongside this event, there will be a virtual fair that will include 36 stands from companies and entities who are leading the energy transformation.

Some of the leaders and diverse experts who will participate in this CEM 12 / MI-6 summit, in addition to the representatives of many governments and the European Commission, include the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry; businessman and former Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg; Secretary General and CEO of the World Energy Council, Angela Wilkinson; Champions for Climate Action for COP 25 and COP 26, Gonzalo Muñoz and Nigel Topping, respectively; explorer and environmentalist, Bertrand Piccard; President of the World Economic Forum, Børge Brende; and the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Inger Andersen.
