Chile Apoya a tu Comuna: the new plan to support Chile’s families with 65 billion pesos of investment

The initiative includes a multi-million-dollar investment to develop a total of 627 projects in 226 municipalities in each of our country’s regions.

Drinking water and lighting projects, repairing sidewalks and streets, sports infrastructure, improving public spaces, and sewage and wastewater works are just some of the initiatives that will be undertaken as part of the new Chile Apoya a tu Comuna (Chile Supports your Municipality) Inclusive Recovery Plan.

The updated plan has four specific goals: to increase security; to cope with the rising cost of living; to support those who have left the labor market; and to boost job creation and help sectors that have been left behind economically.

President Gabriel Boric, speaking alongside Regional and Administrative Development Undersecretary Miguel Crispi, explained that the plan includes a total investment of 65 billion Chilean pesos (US$72 million) for 627 projects in 226 municipalities in each of the country’s regions. The projects seek to improve the quality of life of Chile’s inhabitants and reactivate the local economy.

This national investment will also generate more than 7,000 jobs, with a focus on manpower for sewage works, recovering green areas and public spaces, and repairing neighborhood association buildings.

The regions that will benefit most from the Plan Chile Apoya a tu Comuna will be La Araucanía and Metropolitan regions, with 11.76 billion (US$13 million) and 10.997 billion (US$12 million) Chilean pesos respectively. The Valparaíso and Biobío regions follow them.

It is also important to emphasize that 64% of investment will go to rural and mixed municipalities and only 36% will go to urban municipalities, in order to endorse the government’s commitment to territorial justice.

Investment on a human scale

San Bernardo will be one of the municipalities to benefit from the plan. Three projects will be financed there, generating an investment of around 854 million pesos (US$944,158). These include construction of a drinking water and sewage network for Villa Madrid Osorio, as well as construction of the Manuel Magallanes Moure sports complex, which will have courts for three different sports: football, basketball and volleyball.

Villa Madrid Osorio has 13,574 inhabitants who will benefit from the investment. To date, the population does not have an adequate sports space to develop leisure and recreation activities that would help to promote sports among the area’s children and young people; hence the importance of these works.

Finally, the plan for San Bernardo will include improving the San Enrique Plaza. It consists of the improvement and construction of a green area located in the Portezuelo sector over a two-month period.

This involves providing and planting trees, bushes and ground cover, installing irrigation, laying pavement, and installing and improving urban fittings such as benches and garbage cans. Villa San Enrique has 3,053 inhabitants who will benefit from the improvement of the zone’s public spaces, allowing them to practice sports and outdoor activities.
