[ARCHIVO] President Bachelet: “Trinidad and Tobago is a very important partner for us in the area of energy”

This afternoon in the Las Camelias Patio of La Moneda Presidential Palace, the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, and the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Keith Rowley, participated in a ceremony to sign agreements and then made a joint statement.

The document, which was signed by Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heraldo Muñoz, and the Minister Secretary General of the Presidency of Trinidad and Tobago, Stuart Young, was a memorandum of understanding between the two governments on cooperation and development in the area of intellectual property.

During the ceremony, the President discussed her conversation with the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago on the increasing political, economic, trade and cultural ties between the two countries and confirmed that they share a vision of the importance of regional integration and democracy.

President Bachelet stated, “Trinidad and Tobago is a very important partner for us in the area of energy as the main supplier of liquified natural gas (LNG)”.

She added that, “Trinidad and Tobago accounts for 38% of Chilean exports to the Caribbean Community (Caricom), which is why we are interested in continuing to move towards a trade agreement through the establishment of a working group that will look into its feasibility”.

President Bachelet also spoke about the cooperation programs with Caribbean nations: “Technical assistance projects in food quality and safety, natural disaster prevention, education, improvement of public management and Spanish language courses have recently been developed”.

During her speech, the President recalled that a meeting with Caricom held in July 2016 led to the Disaster Management and Climate Change Adaptation Program, which will be executed by the International Cooperation Agency through 2018.

In regard to the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation and Development of Intellectual Property, President Bachelet stated that, “It will allow us to work on mutual assistance projects and to share experiences in the development of public policies linked to industrial property. We share challenges such as innovation and economic development, and we can reach our goals more quickly if we join forces”.
