[ARCHIVO] President Bachelet receives Chile’s counter-memorial to Bolivia’s maritime claim

Speaking in the Red Salon after the meeting, the President stated, “I have received the final version of the counter-memorial to the maritime claim by Bolivia. This document, the development of which I have followed regularly, has sound legal and historical foundations.”

She added, “over the next few days, both the Chancellor and the Agent will travel to The Hague to present a copy of this counter-memorial, together with 5 annex books, with all of their annexed data, that will provide the full confirmation of the position set out in this document. This will be presented to the International Court of Justice before the final deadline set by the Court, which is 25 July 2016”.

The President further emphasized, “this work is of the finest quality, coordinated and drafted by experts, by international and national jurists, by professionals who are behind the counter-memorial, and we have addressed this claim and challenge through what has been an invariable State policy in our country”.

President Bachelet explained that the contents are of a reserved nature until the pleadings begin.

“I would like to emphasize to our citizens that the sovereignty of our country is not at stake, in any way, and that during this stage we will demonstrate, beyond any doubt, that there is no obligation to negotiate,” she concluded.
