[ARCHIVO] President Bachelet: “I hope that this visit is an important step forward in growing and strengthening the ties that unite our nations”.

Today at noon, President of Chile Michelle Bachelet held a joint press conference with the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, in the context of the latter’s official visit to Chile.

“The President and I have met and discussed –among other things- the Maltese Presidency of the European Union during the first half of this year, the agenda for issues related to gender in our nations and challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals, all of which are enormously important topics for the progress and future of our nations”, President Bachelet said.

The two leaders agreed on the importance of innovation for their nations’ sustainable growth, which is the purpose of the Political Consultation Agreement that they have signed. It will involve setting up an ongoing institutional mechanism to develop the relationship.

President Bachelet added, “we share visions of the world, the challenges that we face in Latin America and Europe and topics that are essential to both countries, such as the need to protect our oceans”.

She continued, “Chile is very committed to this topic, as we have shown through the creation of Protected Marine Areas and Parks and our participation in the ‘Our Ocean’ conferences, one of which we had the honor of organizing. We are very happy to know that the fourth ‘Our Ocean’ conference will take place in Malta in October. Chile will, of course, be there.”

As she concluded her remarks, President Bachelet said, “I hope that this visit is a significant step forward in the growth and strengthening of the ties that unite our peoples and our nations. We hope to continue down this path, deepening our friendship, our relationship and our cooperation, for the good of our peoples.”
