President Piñera announces a criminal lawsuit to clear up the death of former Chilean President Frei Montalva
He explained that the Government has decided to become involved in the legal process through the Interior Ministry “to help clear up the death of a former President and ensure that the circumstances, causes and people responsible are clearly identified”.
The death of the former President “is, of course, of great importance to the Frei family. However, it is also important to the people of Chile as a whole”, Piñera said.
The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, announced this morning that the Government will take part in the legal process surrounding the death of former President Eduardo Frei Montalva, in order to help clear it up once and for all.
“As a way to help clear up the death of a former President and ensure that the circumstances, causes and people responsible are clearly identified, the Government of Chile has decided to become involved in the legal process through the filing of a criminal lawsuit by the Interior Ministry”, the President said, speaking this morning from La Moneda Palace.
He added “during our campaign and on many occasions since, our government, and I myself as President, have made a commitment to the Frei family, and to Chile as a whole, that we would do whatever we could to bring to light the circumstances, causes and people responsible for his death. The former President died in 1982, but it was not until 2009 that Judge Madrid began to investigate those alleged to be responsible”.
President Piñera added that for the Government it is a priority that “those who are responsible should face the consequences”, and said “clearing up the death of President Eduardo Frei Montalva is, of course, of great importance to the Frei family. However, it is also important to the people of Chile as a whole, who want to see the death of the former President resolved once and for all”.
