President Piñera visits Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

The President said “we’re going to be prepared to take every measure necessary to save lives and protect our people, if nature strikes again”

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, today visited the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, an international institution created to provide on-time warnings of the possible effects of tsunamis after a strong earthquake.

The President thanked the organization for its assistance to Chile after the earthquake that struck the country on February 27 of last year. He said, “we have increased our collaboration and improved communication mechanisms between the NOAA [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] in the United States and the SHOA [Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean navy] in Chile, because there is no guarantee that there won’t be another earthquake or tsunami in our country.” President Piñera added, “We’re going to be prepared to take every measure necessary to save lives and protect our people, if nature strikes again.”

On this occasion, the President gave special thanks to Victor Sardina, who was responsible for warning Chile after the earthquake, and said that “his early warning prevented worse things from happening and probably saved many lives.”
