President Piñera heads Interministerial Committee on Human Rights

The President of Chile stressed the importance of respecting and promoting the basic rights of all citizens and his government’s commitment to upholding these rights.

“For this government and for this president, respect for human rights is a fundamental and sacred principle, at all times, in all places, under all circumstances.  There is no just cause for their violation,” stated President Piñera.

At the eighth session of the committee held at La Moneda Palace, participants included Justice and Human Rights Minister Hernán Larraín, Interior Minister Gonzalo Blumel; Health Minister Jaime Mañalich, Defense Minister Alberto Espina, Education Minister Marcela Cubillos and Women and Gender Equity Minister Isabel Plá.

Also present at the meeting were Human Rights Undersecretary Lorena Recabarren, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Carolina Valdivia and the Undersecretary General of the Presidency Juan Francisco Galli. 

Also invited to attend the interministerial meeting were representatives of the National Human Rights Institute, the Children's Ombudsperson Office, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and UNICEF, as well as other organizations.
