The Government of Chile recognizes Juan Guaidó as interim President of Venezuela

In a statement given at La Moneda Palace, President Sebastián Piñera declared that Chile does not recognize the legitimacy of the 2018 elections and will support the leader of the National Assembly of Venezuela in his efforts to restore the Rule of Law.

On Wednesday, President Sebastián Piñera recognized and backed Juan Guaidó as interim President of Venezuela and stated that Chile will support the leader of the National Assembly in his efforts to “move towards the restoration of democracy.”

“We want to show our complete support for his important and transcendent mission to move towards the restoration of democracy, the Rule of Law and freedoms in our sister nation of Venezuela,” said the President, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Ampuero.

President Piñera stated that the government of Chile, together with the Lima Group, especially Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Peru, Colombia, and Canada as well as countries such as the United States and France, have recognized Juan Guaidó as interim President. He also stated that Chile does not recognize the legitimacy of the 2018 elections in Venezuela.

President Piñera stated that clean, free, democratic and transparent elections are the way to peacefully resolve the current crisis in Venezuela.

“The solution to Venezuela’s problems lies in recovering true democratic values and this requires the release of political prisoners, reestablishing and respecting the freedoms and human rights of all Venezuelans,” said the President.
