[ARCHIVO] Congress submits bill that decriminalizes the voluntary interruption of pregnancy for three reasons

The session of the Senate that approved the Mixed Commission report was attended by the following government officials: Minister of Women and Gender Equity Claudia Pascual, Minister Secretary General of the Presidency Nicolás Eyzaguirre, Minister Secretary General of the Government Paula Narvaez, Minister of Justice and Human Rights Jaime Campos, Minister of Health Carmen Castillo and Undersecretary General of the Presidency Gabriel de la Fuente.

The report was approved in the Lower House by 70 votes in favor, 45 votes against and 1 abstention. The Senate approved by 22 votes in favor and 13 against.

“Today we have completed the passage of the bill after two and a half years. We are satisfied and very aware of the work and the conviction involved. We are fulfilling a commitment made by the Government of President Michelle Bachelet”.

“A bill has been passed that gives women options. This is a constitutional bill that not only provides alternatives, but creates safe health services, a program that will accompany all women, regardless of whether they decided to continue with their pregnancy or not,” the Minister said.

She stated, “the approval of this bill is widely supported by the Chilean people”, adding, “we want to thank all the congressmen, the deputies and the senators, for having this debate, for having allowed us to legislate in favor of this bill. And we especially thank the congressmen of the Nueva Mayoría and Amplitud coalitions and the independents who have approved it.”
